PADUS | The Living Plain

The Po basin is the most productive land in Italy and the place where the climate is redrawing the map fastest. The river carries less water than it used to, the sea pushes further upstream, and salt is reaching fields and lagoons that never knew it. Everything here depends on that balance: the rice, the vegetables, the livestock, the clams and mussels of the delta, the towns built on land the river gave them.

I have been following the plain across seasons, from the rice fields to the delta lagoons, from the drought in the canals to the blue crab in the shellfish beds. It is a landscape of work more than of scenery, and the story is not only what is being lost. It is what people are doing with what is left: growers testing varieties that need less water, fishermen setting up for species they never farmed, an entire supply chain rearranging itself in real time.

The plain has been shaped by human hands for a thousand years. This is what happens when the conditions that made it possible start to change.
