Fort Gazzera, located in Venice, is a historic fortification dating back to the late 19th century. Originally built as part of the city's defensive network, it now stands as a remarkable monument of military architecture. Nestled within its grounds are two rare black poplar trees (Populus nigra), a species currently facing the threat of extinction. These trees add ecological and botanical significance to the site, making Fort Gazzera not only a place of historical interest but also a haven for conservation efforts. Visitors can enjoy the unique blend of natural beauty and historical heritage that this site offers.

The black poplar (Populus nigra) is a tree species native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Known for its tall, slender form and heart-shaped leaves, it thrives in moist soils near rivers and wetlands. Unfortunately, the black poplar is facing the threat of extinction due to habitat loss, river management changes, and hybridization with other poplar species. Conservation efforts are critical to preserving this unique and ecologically important tree.

The heart-shaped leaves of the black poplar (Populus nigra) are a distinctive feature of this rare and ecologically vital tree. Found near rivers and wetlands, black poplars are crucial for supporting biodiversity
