I believe it is not true that when you make a portrait you steal a soul, but that to make a good portrait you have to be able to see that soul. The point is precisely this, when you see the soul, the other person feels exposed and thinks you can steal it. That is why I think that taking a portrait is first and foremost a contract between me and the subject, of respect for his soul.
